Setting up the OIT Junk Mail Analyzer

How this system works.

Begin at http://www.oit.umd.edu/email/junkmail/

Use your directory ID and password to log in.

Opt-in:
Initially, your account will be "opted out" of the service. If an account is "opted out" of the service, none of the other options on the Analyzer setup page have any effect. Your e-mail will not be altered under any conditions.

To "Opt in" for the Junk Mail Analyzer service, click the "Score My Mail" button.

Note that chages to Junk Mail Analyzer preferences only become effective at 30 minutes past each hour. This means that changes to preferences may require up to one hour to take effect.

The following options can be configured by clicking the "Advanced Settings" button:
Threshold:
Use this setting to adjust the sensitivity of the analyzer so that it marks most junk mail as such without mistakenly marking mail that you wish to read.

Permitted Senders and Lists:
Enter addresses of friends, colleagues, co-workers, relatives, etc who regularly send you e-mail which you always want to read. Mail from addresses in will always be scored in such a way that it will never be marked as junk mail.

The "Mailing Lists I'm On" list works the same way. Mail to these addresses will never be marked as junk mail.

"Junk Mail Senders" and "Junk Mail Lists I'm On":
Enter e-mail addresses or e-mail list names that send you nothing but junk mail. E-mail from addresses on the "Junk Mail Senders" lists or to addresses on the "Junk Mail Lists I'm On" lists will always be scored as junk mail.

Subject Line Prefix:
This is the text that lets you know that the Analyzer thinks the message is junk mail. Modify this text to suit your own taste.

Junk E-mail Report Format:
Choose one of the three formats to tell the analyzer how to deliver the original message to your inbox.

Languages and Character Sets By Locale:
Select the languages and character sets in which you wish to receive mail. E-mail in other languages and character sets will have an increased likelihood of being identified as spam.

Once these steps are complete, proceed to configure client-side filtering.
