Documentation For The Help Desk's Getting Connected CD (For Window Users)

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) Help Desk's "Getting Connected" CD contains a collection of software (anti-virus, browsers, virtual private networking, etc.) and "how to" information for setting-up this software. It is available for free from the OIT Help Desk.

Installing/Running McAfee Virus Scan

  1. Uninstall any other virus scanning programs (such as Norton Anti-Virus) before installing McAfee Virus Scan.
  2. Insert the Getting Connected CD in the CD-ROM.
  3. Open your My Computer icon and double-click on the CD-ROM icon.
  4. For Windows 2000/XP
    • Open the Network Associates_Mcafee folder.
    • Open the Network folder.
    • Copy the vscan8_network.exe file to your desktop.
  5. For Windows XP/Vista
    • Open the Network Associates_Mcafee folder.
    • Open the Network folder.
    • Copy the vscan85_network.exe file to your desktop.
  6. Double-click the file you copied to your desktop; the program will begin installing.
  7. Choose Perpetual in the License Expiry Type drop-down menu.
  8. Choose the Update Now checkbox and click Finish.
  9. You will be prompted to restart your computer, however, click reboot later.
  10. Double-click the SDATnnnn file in the same folder as the install program to apply updates.
  11. Restart your computer and update McAfee Virus Scan, if you have Internet access.
  12. Restart your computer in Safe Mode and run McAfee Virus Scan twice or until the program detects and deletes no infected files.
    • To open McAfee, go to Start, then Programs, then McAfee
    • Click On Demand Scan.
    • Virus definition files are updated frequently; therefore, download the latest Super Dat File.
  13. If your Internet access was turned off due to a virus, call the OIT Help Desk, with the following information:
    • Your Directory ID
    • Your computer's IP address
  14. After completing the above steps, perform a Windows Update by clicking on Start, then Programs, and then Windows Update.
  15. Reboot your computer

Installing/Running Spybot Search & Destroy
  1. Insert the Getting Connected CD in the CD-ROM.
  2. Open My Computer, double-click on the CD-ROM icon.
  3. Open the Spyware folder. Open the Spybot folder and copy the spybotsd14 file to your desktop.
  4. Double click the file you copied to your desktop; this will install the program.
  5. Double-click on the "spybotsd_includes" file in the same folder as the install program to apply updates.
  6. Shut down your computer after you install the program.
  7. Start your computer in Safe Mode.
  8. Run Spybot Search & Destroy twice or until the program detects and deletes no infected files.
  9. After completing the above steps, perform a Windows Update by clicking on Start, then Programs, and then Windows Update.

Finding Your Directory ID
  1. Go to directory.umd.edu
  2. Click on Search for Your University Directory Entry .
  3. Fill out the form and click on Submit to find out what your Directory ID is.

Changing Your E-mail Forwarding Address
  1. Students should go to www.testudo.umd.edu.
    • Click on Keep your e-mail address up to date.
    • Read the screen that appears and click on Submit.
    • Log in with your Directory ID or UID and Directory password.
    • In the E-mail Address field, enter your directoryID@mail.umd.edu.
    • At the bottom of the page, click on Update Address Information.
  2. Faculty/Staff members should go to www.ares.umd.edu.
    • Click on the Payroll and Human Resources link.
    • Click on the Display/Update Personal Data link.
    • Log in with your Directory ID and Directory Password.
    • In the All Employees must provide an Office Phone section, type your email address , directoryID@mail.umd.edu, in the Primary E-Mail Address field.
    • Click on Update.
    • Click on Logout.
  3. Any other e-mail address can be entered as a forwarding or primary e-mail address, but e-mails sent there will not remain on the mail.umd.edu server.
