How to Configure A Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.6 Office Ethernet Connection

  • Make sure the network cord fits snug into the wall jack and into the network card itself.
  • Turn your computer on and make sure that the cord is plugged in.
  1. Click on the Apple menu on the top-left corner of the screen and select System Preferences.

  2. Click on the Network icon located on the Internet and Network section.

  3. Make sure that location is set to automatic.
  4. Select Ethernet Connected in the window pane on the left after the Network Preferences window opens.

  5. Click on the pop-up menu next to Configure: and select Manually.
  6. Enter in the IP Address, Subnet Mask and Router (sometimes called Gateway) that corresponds with the jack number in your office. Contact the IT Service Center if you need help with this step.
  7. Enter 128.8.74.2 and 128.8.76.2 in the DNS Servers: box.
  8. Enter umd.edu in the Search Domains: box.
  9. Click the Apply button. You are now connected to your office Ethernet.
