Enabling Automatic Checking for Mac OS X Software Updates

Mac OS X users can set their system preferences to automatically check for software updates at regular intervals. This feature allows you to easily download and install security patches and bug fixes. Here are the steps for enabling automatic checking for software updates:

  1. Double-click the System Preferences icon. System Preferences in located in the Applications folder on your hard drive.

  2. The System Preferences window will open.

  3. Click once on the Software Update icon.

  4. The Software Update window will appear. Click once on the Update Software button.

  5. Place a check next to Check for updates and set the drop-down menu to either Daily, Weekly, or Monthly.

  6. Automatic checking for updates is now enabled.

  7. To check if any updates are available immediately, click the Check Now button.

  8. When updates are available, Software Update will automatically launch itself and begin searching for updates. A list of updates that are available will appear. Place a check next to those you wish to install and then click the Install button. Some updates may require that you restart the computer.
