If a Glue mail server (such as jolt.umd.edu)
is down, anyone using it for a mail server will have problems
getting mail from Glue.
If you are having such problems, it's worth checking to see
if it is a server-down problem before calling the Office of Information Technology (OIT)
Help Desk.
First, find out which mail-host machine your Glue account
uses as a mail server, by typing the following at a command
prompt of any Glue computer or account:
hesinfo userid
mailhost
where userid is your glue user id.
Once you find out from the response to this command which
mail-host you are using, you can use the
ping command to see if it is up:
ping
mail-host
If you get no response from the server, it is down, either
due to a system crash or a network outage. If you do get a
response, the machine may be up but not delivering mail
properly. In either case, you should contact the OIT Help
Desk to notify us of the outage and we will have someone take a
look at it.
