How to Use the F-Secure SSH Client

Once you have installed the F-Secure SSH client, you can use the software to securely connect to a remote system such as WAM or Glue.

  1. Start the telnet client by either clicking on Start, then Programs, then the F-Secure SSH Client Trial folder, then F-Secure SSH Client Trial, or by double-clicking on the F-Secure SSH Client Trial desktop icon.

    • If this is your first time using either the F-Secure telnet client or the F-Secure FTP client, you will be asked to generate a random security code by moving the mouse cursor across the Generate Random Seed screen. Once you have finished generating the random seed, the window will disappear.

  2. When the F-Secure SSH Client window appears, click on the menu bar item labeled Quick Connect.

  3. The Connect to Remote Host window will appear.  Fill in the boxes with the appropriate information.  In the Host name or IP address box, enter the full hostname of the remote system you wish to connect to (like "wam.umd.edu" or "glue.umd.edu").  In the User Name box, enter your username on the remote system.  Leave the rest of the settings as they are unless you know that you need to change the port number.

  4. Then click on the Connect button.  A password window will appear.  Enter your password on the remote system and then click OK.

  5. At this point, you will be connected to the remote system.  You will see information regarding your last login, a warning message about your use of disk space (if you are running out of space as in the example below), a notification if there are any news items regarding the system, and a command prompt.

  6. If you plan on connecting to this remote system again, then you will want to save the information you entered in step 3 in a profile.  To do this, click on the Profiles button (next to the Quick Connect button) and choose Add Profile from the menu that appears.

  7. A small Add Profile window will appear.  Simply type in a name for the profile and then click on the Add Current Connection to Profiles button.  From now on, you can connect to that remote system again by clicking on the Profiles, choosing the profile you just made from the list, and hitting the Enter key or spacebar on your keyboard.

  8. To end your session on the remote system, type "logout" at the command prompt and hit the Enter key.  The text in the telnet window will turn gray when the connection is terminated.
