Spyware Alert: MarketScore

The Office of Information Technology advises University computer users against the use of MarketScore (also known as NetSetter). This network re-direction service advertises itself as an Internet speed accelerator. Independent experts have observed no measurable increase in network speed resulting from its use.

MarketScore is really a traffic re-router that captures user data for re-sale to retailers and market researchers. MarketScore can even re-route data passed through secure (https) connections. This may include Records and Registration information, user names, passwords, or bank and credit card information.

While MarketScore does have in place a user information privacy policy, individual users have no way to ensure that MarketScore and other similar services take appropriate steps to ensure that their user data is not inadvertently disclosed to third parties. Further, that policy may change at any time.

To learn how to protect your Windows computer against this and other potential problems, please see our Basic Windows Security Page.

McAfee Virus Scan 8, Spybot Search and Destroy or Ad-Aware will remove this program
