Turning Off the Windows XP Firewall

Click here for information about enabling the firewall.

Windows XP comes with built-in firewall software that is activated(by default) when you create a network connection. Firewalls are designed to protect your computer by closing unnecessary network openings, or ports, on your system that hackers or viruses might use to enter your system. Some programs, however, need to use these openings in order to work properly. If you install any software that uses the Internet and it doesn't seem to be working, try turning off the firewall for your network connection and see if that makes a difference.

To turn off the Windows XP firewall, do the following:

  1. Click on the Start button.
  2. Choose Control Panel.
  3. Choose Network Connections.
  4. Right-click on the icon for your Internet connection.
  5. Choose Properties from the pop-up window.
  6. Click on the Advanced tab in the window that appears.
  7. Click the Settings button next to Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet.
  8. Click the Off radio button to turn off Firewall for this Network.
  9. Click the OK button twice. You have now turned off the firewall.
