Securing Email Connections in Thunderbird

Secure Connection Setup for Mozilla Thunderbird 1.x

This web page will guide you through setting up Thunderbird 1.x so that you can use it securely to send and receive e-mail. To set up the Secure Connection, do the following:

  1. Click to select the Account Name (in this case, "mail.umd.edu"). To the right you will see an Accounts window.
  2. Click on the link to View settings for this account

  3. Click on the Server Settings entry beneath "mail.umd.edu"
  4. Click Use Secure Connection (SSL) so it is checked. NOTE: Do not change the default port number.

  5. Click on the Outgoing Server (SMTP) entry beneath "mail.umd.edu"
  6. In the User secure connection section, click on the radio button for TLS, if available to select it.
    NOTE: Do not change the default port number.

  7. Click OK to accept your updates
