Getting Started

The purpose of this document is to instruct you in printing from a computer in the WAM labs at the University. These instructions assume that you have established print authorization by opening a print account and that you have transferred funds from your Terrapin Express Account to the print account's bank (see How Do I Access the Bank?).

Note: Access to WAM labs at the University is limited. You must have a valid University ID to use the labs.

If you do not have a Terrapin Express Account, you can open one with a minimum deposit of $20 in room 1109, South Campus Dining Hall or you can activate an account at https://sis.umd.edu/terpexp/. If you do not have Print Authorization, you can establish this privilege at the Office of Information Technology (OIT) Help Desk.

Note: For more information about Terrapin Express, see: http://www.dining.umd.edu/terrapin_express/.

Printing from a PC

To print from a Windows application, select the Print command from within the application you are using. The Print window then appears, it allows you to define your specifications. Click on OK. The resulting NPP for Windows dialog box is displayed below:

PC dialog box

The NPP for Windows dialog box for Windows applications provides the option to declare a maximum page estimate (10 pages is the default; this assumes a balance of at least $1 in your account per print job).

The default number of pages box is particularly important if your funds are below the amount needed to print the default number of pages. For instance, if you only have $.90 (90 cents) left in your bank, it is not enough to pay for printing the 10 default pages. Yet, if you only need to print one or two pages, $.90 is adequate. In order to successfully print, you should change the default page limit to a number that is less than your bank balance (in this case, nine or fewer pages).

Once you have provided this optional printing setup information for the NPP for Windows dialog box, select the Print button.

You will then see the Print Authorization Warning displayed below:

Click on the OK button. The Print Authorization dialog box displayed below will appear.

Enter your Print Account number and Password in the box. You must have a password to print. Once you have entered your password, click on the OK button to proceed. A status window at the bottom of the Print dialog box will indicate the queuing progress (by percent) of your print request. Close the dialog box on your screen once you have successfully posted your job to the print queue.

Note: Due to the encryption process needed to protect the security of your print funds and CPU speed limitations, the printing process may seem slow.

Printing from a Macintosh

To print from a Macintosh (from within an application), choose Print from the File menu. The print dialog box will appear, giving you a chance to define your Macintosh print specification as illustrated below. Click on the Print Button.

The dialog box will prompt you for your Print Account number, Password and a cost limit. The dialog box also notes the printer to which your job will be directed and a queue name (that can be used to help you trace your print job). Your printed copy is then sent to the laser printer you selected. You will be similarly prompted for your Print Account number, Password and a Page Estimate for remote access also. A sample of this dialog is illustrated below:

Printing from a Sun Ultra or Linux Workstation

WAM Sun Ultra and Linux workstations can print to laser printers in each of the WAM labs as well as high-speed line printers at OIT. The laser printers in the WAM labs can print both ASCII text and PostScript files. Because of graphics and multiple fonts, most applications produce PostScript output.

When printing in an application, you may select among the printers in the various WAM labs. Applications that have been configured to allow printing usually have a Print option. If this option is not available within the application, use the qpr command within a UNIX terminal window. The application may require that you print to a file before using the qpr command. The format of the qpr command is:

qpr -q  printer-name filename

In addition to the laser printers that support PostScript, you can send program listings and other plain ASCII files to prl, the OIT IBM 3800 laser printer located at the OIT dispatch window in the A.V. Williams Bldg., room 1299.

You will be prompted for your Print Account number, Password and possibly a Page Estimate for remote access. See a sample of this dialog below.

Note: Nothing will appear on your monitor when you enter your authorization account number and password.

How Do I Get Credit for Poor Print Quality?

Credit request forms are available on-line at the OIT Help Desk web site Bad Print Refunds. Credit is given for bad print copies caused by malfunctioning printers. Credit is not given for poor formatting or editorial mistakes. (Samples of bad print jobs are posted in labs.) Bad copies should be returned to the OIT Help Desk for processing.

Credit requests will be processed within five working days of receipt. Funds will be credited to your print account; no cash will be exchanged. Credit must be requested within one month of the bad printout. You will never be asked to divulge your password in order to receive credit for poor copies.

You may also submit a problem report to the OIT Help Desk by typing request at the UNIX command prompt.
