How to Reset a Lost or Forgotten Directory Password

As long as you have created an answer to all the Security Questions you will be able to use this feature of the Password Tool. If not, please contact the Office of Information Technology (OIT) Help Desk.

In your browser, enter the following link: https://directory.umd.edu.

Note: while you work through the Directory ID pages, do not hit the back key on the browser window.

On the Password Management page, https://www.directory.umd.edu/password, click the  button. This will show the Forgotten Password window.

If you are coming to this page for the first time and do not know your Directory ID, please click the Find your Directory ID button button. This will take you to the Identity Verification window to help you validate your information.

To begin your verification, enter the following pieces of information into the system:

  1. Enter The Last Five Digits of Your SSN into this field

  2. Use the down arrows to select Your Date of Birth

  3. Enter Your Last Name

    Your Last Name field

  4. Click the Submit button Click the Submit button

This will link to the Password Setup page.

  1. Enter the password you wish to use in the New Password field
  2. Enter the password you wish to use again in the Re-enter New Password field.
  3. Click the Click the Update button button

Once you have correctly created the Directory ID Password, you will see an invitation to create your security questions (if the Security Questions have already been created you will see an invitation to change them).

Answer the Security Questions for added security to your account. Once you have answered the questions and clicked the Update button, you will see the web page Your Directory Password Security Questions have been set. It is at this point you will see your current Directory ID and the link which will ask you to accept or select your Directory ID.

At this point you need to click the link accept or select your Directory ID. Click on the link and then accept or change your Directory ID.

I know my Directory ID but have not created the Security Questions

If you know your Directory ID but have not yet created the Security Questions, you will be told to contact the Help Desk at 301.405.1400 (Students) or 301.405.1500 (Faculty / Staff). The Directory ID field of information is reserved for people who have already created their Security Questions

I know my Directory ID and have set up the Security Questions

If you know your Directory ID and have set up the Security Questions, once you type your Directory ID into the Directory ID field and click the Submit button, you will see the following window

You will be asked three security questions (Note: you do not have a choice of question at this window).

  1. Enter the answer to Question 1: What are the last 5 digits of your drive's license number?
  2. Enter the answer to Question 2: What is your brother's/sister's middle name?
  3. Enter the answer to Question 3: What is the name of the first school you attended?

At this point you will be prompted to answer the security questions about your personal information. Once you have completed this information, click the Continue button.

  1. The Last Five Digits of Your SSN
  2. Your Date of Birth (Month, Day, Year)
  3. Your Last Name
  4. Click the Continue button

Once you have successfully answered the Security Questions, the Password Setup screen appears.

  1. Enter the New Password in the New Password field
  2. Enter the New Password in the Re-enter New Password field
  3. Click the Update button and at this point you can update your Security Questions or Logout
