Q: What are "WAM"and "Glue"?

A: WAM and Glue were both created nearly 20 years ago as multi-platform computing environments. WAM, which is an acronym for "Workstations at Maryland," was originally created to facilitate student computing. Glue, which originated within the School of Engineering, was designed to accommodate the needs of faculty, staff, and students. Over time, the two environments began to provide an increasingly similar set of capabilities, which now include:

  • a large number of applications, such as Mathematica, Matlab, SAS, Star Office, and much more
  • an academic and research environment providing computational resources such as development tools, databases, etc.
  • a place to store files and access them from the network
  • access to files using Windows, OS/X, and UNIX
  • e-mail services
  • web page publishing

Q: What will happen to my WAM account?

A: Behind the scenes, all WAM resources will migrate to Glue. For some, this will result in a brief outage, but the migration process will not begin until the summer and all migrations will occur during off hours. Our goal is to make the process as transparent as possible. Advanced notification will be provided prior to the migration of your files.

Q: I don't have a WAM account. How does this affect me?

A: We will be making further enhancements to the University computing environment in the future which cannot be implemented until on the WAM/Glue consolidation completes. We will be sharing more information about upcoming changes during the coming months.

Q: How much storage will I have after the migration is complete?

A: You will have sufficient space to accommodate the needs of both your WAM and Glue accounts.

Q: What will happen to WAM labs?

A: The labs will likely be renamed at some point, but they will provide the same functionality as they do now.

Q: What happens to my WAM e-mail and Web pages?

A: WAM e-mail will be forwarded to the appropriate address and WAM Web pages will continue to exist by their current name (e.g., www.wam.umd.edu/~user). All references to wam.umd.edu (e.g., e-mail addresses and Web pages) will continue to exist for at least one year.

Q: How will you determine which account should be my primary account?

A: If neither of your accounts have been used for at least a year, your Glue account will be selected as your primary account.

If both of your accounts have been used within 30 days of each other, your Glue account will be selected as your primary account.

If one of your accounts has been used more than 30 days after your other account, the most recently used account will be selected as your primary account.

In all cases, if we are unable to determine which account should be primary, the Glue account will be chosen as such.

Q: What do you mean by "primary account"?

A: Your primary account will be the account you see when you log in. It will be the account that provides your login settings, screen backgrounds, bookmarks, favorites, etc. Your secondary account will be copied to a subdirectory (Glue-home or WAM-home as appropriate) within your primary account.
