The following instructions will guide you through configuring
Outlook 2007 to access your Mail@umd account:

Open Outlook. On the menu bar, click on Tools and then
choose Account Settings from the Tools menu.

Choose the E-mail tab in the window that appears and
click the New e-mail icon

Select in the Auto Account Setup window the check box on
the bottom of the window to Manually configure server settings or
additional server types.
Do not let the system set it up automatically as the system will
set up a POP3 account and not an IMAP account.

Click Next
-
Choose the type of server to which you will
be connecting. Choose the Internet E-mail radio
button.
- Click on the Next button.

- You need to enter the following information in the next window:

Your name: Your exact name
(ex: John L. Smith)

Your e-mail address: Your e-mail
address on the Mail@umd system, which
is based on your University Directory ID. For example, if your University
Directory ID is "test", then your e-mail address would be
"test@umd.edu"

Account Type: IMAP
-
Incoming mail server: Set
this to mail.umd.edu
-
Outgoing mail server: Set
this to mail.umd.edu

User Name: Enter your University
Directory ID.

Password: Enter your University
Directory password (it will be displayed as asterisks). Make sure the
Remember password box
below the password is checked.
- Click on the More Settings button when you are done.
- Click on the Outgoing Server tab When the Internet
E-Mail Settings window appears. Make sure My outgoing server
(SMTP) requires authentication is checked.

Click on the Advanced tab

Under Server Port Numbers you will see:

Incoming server (IMAP) - Select Use the
following type of an encrypted connection. Select SSL
from the drop down menu.

Outgoing server (SMTP) - If your outgoing mail
server is mail.umd.edu, select TLS form
the drop down menu
Do not change the default port numbers

Click OK to accept the changes

Click the Next button
-
Click the Finish button

If you did not enter your University Directory password in step 4, you
will be prompted to enter it now. Otherwise, Outlook will begin to
retrieve your e-mail from Mail@umd and will have successfully setup
Outlook
to access your Mail@umd account.

Outlook 2007 is configured by default to NOT display any image files
in the e-mail messages you receive. Instead of displaying the image, Outlook
displays the following message: Right-click here to download
pictures. To help protect your privacy, Outlook prevented automatic
download of this picture from the Internet. You can right-click on
any of these messages in the e-mail to then view the images.
NOTE: If you do not like this setting, you can change it by clicking on
Tools on the Outlook menu bar, then
choosing Trust Center. In the Trust Center window,
select Automatic Download from the left side menu. You
also have the option to permit downloading pictures form safe sender.
Read the explanation about why downloading images in e-mail messages
compromises your security, but if you still want to change the setting,
uncheck the box next to Don't download pictures automatically in
the HTML e-mail message.
