Set up Outlook Express
- Open Outlook Express by double clicking the icon on your desktop.
If you do not see the Outlook Express icon, click on Start,
Programs, and choose Outlook Express. After Outlook Express
loads, you should see a welcome screen similar to the one below. If the
New
mail wizard opens, click Cancel and continue following these
instructions.
- With Outlook Express open, click on Tools and choose
Accounts.
- The Internet Accounts window opens with the Mail tab
selected by default.
- Click on Add and select Mail.
- Enter your name in the Display name: field and click
Next.
- Enter in the e-mail address of your account in the
E-mail address: field and click Next.
Note: the e-mail address you enter should look similar to
this: Johndoe@wam.umd.edu. Remember, the @wam portion may be
different depending on the type of account you are configuring for
Outlook Express.
- In this step, you must first choose the type of mail server. We
recommend setting the incoming mail server to
IMAP because you will always have a copy of your messages on the
mail server. If you decide to choose POP3, beware that your
messages will be downloaded off the mail server to your local hard drive.
This means if you delete the message off your computer, you will have
no back-up copy. Type in the appropriate IMAP or POP server for your
e-mail account in the Incoming mail box:
IMAP
If your e-mail account is a:
- Mail@UMD account, use mail.umd.edu
- WAM account, use imap.wam.umd.edu
- Glue account, use imap.glue.umd.edu
- Deans account, use imap.deans.umd.edu
POP
If your e-mail account is a:
- Mail@UMD account, use mail.umd.edu
- WAM account, use pop.wam.umd.edu
- Glue account, use pop.glue.umd.edu
- Deans account, use pop.deans.umd.edu
Next, enter the appropriate Outgoing
mail server name
for your e-mail account using the list below:
PLEASE NOTE: If you use an Internet service provider
(ISP) other than the University of Maryland for Internet access, you
must use your ISP's SMTP server (contact your Internet Service Provider
for more information on this) instead of one of the servers listed below.
- Mail@UMD account, use mail.umd.edu
- WAM account, use smtp.wam.umd.edu
- Glue account, use smtp.glue.umd.edu
- Deans account, use smtp.deans.umd.edu
Once you have filled in the server names, click Next to continue.
- Enter in your Account name: and Password: in the
appropriate fields, and click Next.
Note: Check the Remember password box if you would like the
computer to automatically log you into your account.
- Now click the Finish button to end the wizard.
Secure Connection Setup for Outlook Express
6.x
This section will guide you through setting up Outlook Express 6.x so
you can use it securely to send and receive e-mail. Open Outlook
Express and do the following:

menu and select Accounts

- Click to select the Mail tab
- Highlight your mail account name (in this case
"mail.umd.edu")
- Click to select the Properties button

- In the Properties window, click on the
Servers tab
- In the Outgoing Mail Server section at the bottom,
if your outgoing mail server is mail.umd.edu, check
the box My Server Requires Authentication.
NOTE: Leave this un-checked for WAM, Glue or Deans.

- Click on the Advanced tab
- If your outgoing mail server is mail.umd.edu, in the
Advanced tab,
make sure that This server
requires a secure connection (SSL) is checked for
Outgoing mail (SMTP).
NOTE: Leave this
un-checked for WAM, Glue or Deans.
- Incoming mail
(IMAP): make sure that This server
requires a secure connection (SSL) is checked for
Incoming mail (IMAP).
- Do not change the default port numbers
- At the bottom of the Properties window, click

Read Your E-mail
-
Once the account has been created and the security settings set, select
the new account by clicking on it
once, then
click the Set as Default button. Finally, click Close.
- The next window that appears will ask if you would like to
download folders. Click Yes to continue.
- After clicking yes, Outlook Express will download your mail folders.
- Once your mail folders have been downloaded, you will see a
list of your folders in this window. Click OK to continue.
- Outlook Express has been successfully set up to receive mail from
your account. In the left pane you should see the name of the mail server
that you have created. If there is a plus (+) sign next to
server name, click the plus sign to expand it's contents. Once the list
is expanded, you should see the Inbox folder. Click on the Inbox
and Outlook Express will connect to the mail server and retreive your
messages. If nothing happens, click on the Send/Recv icon just to
make sure Outlook Express is working correctly.
- By default, the message preview pane is enabled in Outlook
Express. In Outlook Express 5.0 and 5.5, the preview pane is a
security risk because you can accidentally activate a virus by
viewing an infected e-mail message in the preview pane (Outlook
Express 6 does not have this security flaw). If you are
using Outlook Express 5.0 or 5.5, please disable
the preview pane by clicking View, and choosing Layout....
- Next, locate the Preview Pane category and un-check
Show preview pane. Click Apply and click OK.
- The preview pane should be disabled. If you would like to read a
message, double click on the message and it will open in a new window.
This ends the Outlook Express set-up procedure: you can now send and
receive e-mail through Outlook Express.
