How to delete (cancel) a news item using tin

Any user who creates a new posting has more control over the post than just letting it go out to the proper newsgroup(s). The creator of a posting may get rid of it by cancelling it. To do this, it depends upon which newsreader you're using. The only people that can cancel/delete a post are the creator and the system administrator(s).

  • In 'rn' or 'trn', when you're in (at the end of) the post, type "" (capital "") for "" You'll see something like:
(Mail) End of article 3338 (of 3338) -- what next? [npq] C
    Canceling...
(Mail) End of article 3338 (of 3338) -- what next? [npq]

If you get no message, you can assume the article was canceled.

  • In 'tin', the same action is called deleting the article. To do this, type "" (capital ""). You should see " article..." appear briefly under the list of commands at the bottom of the screen, then " Deleted" should appear at bottom center.
