How to set up Outlook 2000 for Mail@UMD

Note for Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT, and Windows 2000 Users
Before you proceed with the instructions below, make sure that Outlook is capable of using 128-bit encryption to secure the messages being sent to and from the Mail@umd mail server. The easiest way to determine this is to open Microsoft Outlook, click on Help on the menu bar, choose About Microsoft Outlook, and click on the Security Info button. In the second line of text, make sure that the Cipher Strength is listed as 128 bits. If it is not, then:

  • If you are running Windows 2000, download and install the Windows 2000 High Encryption Pack before you proceed with configuring Outlook 2000.
  • If you are running another version of Windows, you should either upgrade to Outlook XP or take the following steps to give Outlook 2000 the ability to do 128-bit encryption:
    1. Uninstall Outlook 2000 (you will lose your current Outlook settings and any e-mail stored in local Outlook folders as a result)
    2. Download and install Internet Explorer 6(which comes with 128-bit encryption)
    3. Reinstall Outlook 2000

  1. Open up Outlook. From the menu bar, select Tools, and then click on Accounts

    Open
Accounts window

  2. In the window that appears, select the Mail tab and click Add and then Mail to begin the setup wizard.
  3. An Internet Connection Wizard will open and ask you to answer some simple questions to set up your mail account. First, type in your full name as you want recipients to see it. Click Next to continue.

    Enter your
name

  4. Type in your e-mail address in the form username@umd.edu (for example, if your Mail@umd name was "test", you would enter "test@umd.edu" as in the image below). Click Next to continue.

    Enter
your e-mail address

  5. Next, you will type in the incoming and outgoing mail servers. You incoming mail server can be either a POP or IMAP server (IMAP is recommended). Once you know which one of these you want to use, use the drop-down menu to select IMAP or POP, and in the field where it says Incoming Mail (POP, IMAP, HTTP) Server, and in the field that says Outgoing mail (SMTP) server, type mail.umd.edu

    Enter the
mail server information

  6. Type in your user name in the Account Name field. Following the earlier example, if your e-mail address was test@umd.edu, your user name will be test.

    Enter your
user name

  7. Type in the password for your Mail@umd account (this is the same as your UM Directory password). Make sure the Remember password box is checked. Then click the Next button.
  8. Click the Finish button to complete the setup wizard.

    Finish
setup

  9. You will now see your mail account under the Mail tab in the accounts window. There are still a few feature you need to configure before you can access your e-mail. Click on the account , then click the Set as Default button if you have more than one account listed. Next click on the Properties button.

    Open the
properties of the account

  10. A mail properties window will appear. Click the Servers tab.

    Select the
servers tab

  11. Check the box at the bottom that says My Server Requires Authentication. Make sure Log on using Secure Password Authentication is UNCHECKED.
  12. Click on the Advanced tab. Make sure that This server requires a secure connection (SSL) is checked for Outgoing Mail (SMTP) and Incoming Mail (IMAP).

    Enable SSL

  13. Once you have done this, click Apply and then Ok. The box will then close.
  14. You will now see the account window that you originally accessed to begin setup. Click Close on this window.
  15. Outlook will now prompt you for your e-mail password. Type it and click Ok.
  16. If your password is accepted, the messages contained in your inbox will appear on the right, and then you can start sending and receiving mail with your Mail@umd account.
