Configuring Windows Vista Mail With Your Mail@umd E-mail Account

  1. Click on Start, then All Programs, and Windows Mail to open Windows Vista Mail.
  2. Enter your display name, then click Next.

    NOTE: (If you had previously opened this program, you may not see the window above. If this is the case, click to select Tools then Accounts, and Add button. Click Next. Enter your display name and click Next. Continue to Step 3.)
  3. Enter your full e-mail address, (for example: someone@umd.edu), then click Next.
  4. Select the incoming e-mail server type: POP3, IMAP or HTTP. Select IMAP as this is the preferred setup for University e-mail retrieval.
  5. Enter mail.umd.edu as both the incoming mail server and outgoing mail server.
  6. Check Outgoing server requires authentication box.

  7. Enter your e-mail username on the Internet Mail Logon page.    ( NOTE: Your e-mail username will be whatever proceeds the @umd.edu in your e-mail address (the same as your Directory ID). For example, terpsrock2045@umd.edu would make terpsrock2045 the e-mail username.)
  8. Enter the password for your e-mail account in the password field (the same as your Directory password).
  9. Check Remember password box.
  10. Click Next.
  11. Click Do not download my e-mail and folders at this time box.
  12. Click Finish.

  14. Click Advanced tab.

  15. Click This server requires a secure connection (SSL) box Under Outgoing mail (SMTP)
  16. Click This server requires a secure connection (SSL) box Under Incoming mail (IMAP)
  17. Click OK

  18. Click Close. You should have now finished configuring Windows Vista Mail.
  19. Windows Mail should prompt you to check your e-mail. If it does not, you can manually check by clicking on the Send/Receive Menu button.
