With the dramatic increase in the number of computer viruses every day,
PCs are more and more vulnerable to virus attacks.
As a member of the University of Maryland at College Park community,
you have many virus protection resources available to you for
FREE. You can download McAfee Anti-Virus for your PC
or Virex Anti-Virus for your Macintosh from the
Virus Notification Program web page.
Keeping these programs updated after you download them is critical to
maintaining protection for your system and cleaning newly discovered
viruses. To updated the software, click on the appropriate link:
A computer virus is a program that modifies other programs by adding
a copy of itself into the infected programs. The amount of damage done
depends on the type of virus. Some may do no or little damage, while
others may completely destroy your files or render your machine
unusable. There are two main classes of viruses.
The first type attaches itself to ordinary program files or document
files, while the second type infects system or boot records such as
in the partition table of your hard disk or the
boot sector of your floppies.
