Once you have installed the F-Secure SSH client, you can use the software
to move or copy files from your local computer to a remote system
such as Workstations at Maryland
(WAM) or Glue using the File Transfer Protocol (FTP).

Exit the FTP Client
Connect to a Remote System
-
Start the FTP client by either clicking on Start, then
Programs, then the F-Secure SSH Client
Trial folder, then F-Secure SSH
File Transfer Trial, or by double-clicking on the
F-Secure SSH File Transfer Trial
desktop icon.
- Note: If this is your first time using either the F-Secure SSH
client or the F-Secure SFTP client, you will be asked to generate a random
security code by moving the mouse cursor across the Generate Random Seed
screen. Once you have finished generating the random seed, the window
will disappear.
-
Click on the menu bar item
labeled Quick Connect when the F-Secure SSH Client window appears.
-
Fill in the boxes with the appropriate information when the Connect to Remote Host window appears.
- Enter the full hostname of the remote system you wish
to connect to (like "wam.umd.edu" or "glue.umd.edu") in the Host name of IP address box.
- Enter your username on the remote system in the Unser Name box. Leave the
rest of the settings as they are unless you know that you need to change
the port number.
-
Click on the Connect button. If this is the first
time you've connected to this particular remote system, a dialog box will
appear informing you of the public security key of this remote system, and will allow you to save a record of this key in your F-Secure
program.
- Click Yes
-
Enter your password on the remote system when the password window appears and click OK.
-
You are now connected to your home directory on the remote
system. In the left column of the F-Secure window, you will see a list of
the file folders (also called directories) in your home directory, while
the right column will display the list of directories and files that are
contained in whichever folder is highlighted/selected in the left
column. In the example below, the right column is displaying some of the
contents of the home directory. If you were to click on the Apps folder
in the left column of the window, the right column would then display the
contents of the Apps folder. The very bottom of the window displays the
name of the remote system to which you are connected (in this example,
wam.umd.edu) and the type of encryption in use.
-
If you plan on connecting to this remote system again, then you will want
to save the information you entered in step 3 in a profile.
Click on the Profiles button (next to the Quick Connect button)
and choose Add Profile from the menu that appears.
-
Type in a name
for the profile in the Add Profile window
and then click on the Add Current Connection to Profiles
button. From now on, you can connect to that remote system again
by clicking on the Profiles button, choosing the
profile you just made
from the list, and hitting the Enter key or spacebar on your keyboard.
-
If you leave the FTP client idle for several minutes, it may disconnect
from the remote system. If that occurs, reconnect using the Quick
Connect button.
How to Upload and Download Files
Uploading and downloading files to and from the remote system is
straightforward.
To upload files:
-
Select the directory on the remote system where you want the uploaded file
to go from the list of directories in the left column of the F-Secure
window.
-
Check the file transfer
mode buttons in the toolbar section of the window. The transfer mode buttons, in order from
left to right, are: Ascii/text, Binary, and Auto. Unless you know for a
fact that you have to
upload the file as a binary file or a text file, leave the file transfer
mode set to Auto, which should be pressed down by default (as shown in
the example below).
-
Click on the Upload button (the
up-arrow button) in the Upload window.
-
Use the Look in drop-down
box to navigate to the folder on your computer that contains the file or
files you
want to upload when the Upload window appears.
- Select (highlight) the first file by clicking on
it. You
can select more than one file by holding down either the Shift key or the
Control key as you click on additional files.
- Click
the Upload button at the bottom of the window when you are done. A
dialog box will appear and show the progress of the upload.
-
Click the
Close button when the upload is complete. The uploaded files should now appear on
the remote system in the directory you chose.
To download files:
-
Select the directory on the remote system that contains the file or files
you want to download from the list of directories in the left column of
the F-Secure
window.
-
Select (highlight) the first file you want to download by clicking on
it in the right column. Note: You
can select more than one file by holding down either the Shift key or the
Control key as you click on additional files.
- Check the file
transfer mode buttons located in the toolbar section of the window (below the menu bar).
The transfer mode buttons, in order from
left to right, are: Ascii/text, Binary, and Auto. Unless you know for a
fact that you have to
upload the file as a binary file or a text file, leave the file transfer
mode set to Auto, which should be pressed down by default (as shown in
the example below).
-
Click on the Download button (the
down-arrow button) located in the toolbar section of the window. The Download window will appear.
-
Navigate to the folder on your computer
where you want to place those files.
- Click on the
Download button and a dialog box will appear that shows you the progress of the download.
-
Click on the Close
button when the download is complete. The downloaded files should now appear on the remote system in the
directory you chose.
How to Change Directories
When you use F-Secure to connect to your WAM or Glue account, F-Secure by
default shows you only the contents of your home directory. If you want
to transfer files to and from another directory in your account (for
example, if you want to put web page files in your pub directory so others
can see them), you will need to change to a different directory.
-
Choose Operation from the menu bar and then
Go to Folder.
-
The Go to Folder dialog box will appear, and it will display the full path
of the current directory path in the Enter Folder Name
box. The full path will end with the word "home": remove
"home" from the end of the path (as shown in the example
below)
- Click OK
-
The left column in the F-Secure window will now display all of the folders
in your account, which will be listed under your username
("bc" is the username in the example below). You can then
select any of those folders, such as the pub folder, to access their
contents.
Exit the FTP Client
-
Click on the disconnect button (shown
below) to exit the FTP client, or choose File from the menu bar and choose
Disconnect.
-

the help documentation in the program by clicking on Help on the
F-Secure SSH Client menu bar.
