Secure Connection Setup for Outlook 2003/XP

This web page will guide you through setting up Outlook 2003/XP so that you can use it securely to send and receive e-mail. To set up the Secure Connection, do the following:

  1. Open Outlook mail
  2. Click Tools from the Microsoft Outlook menu bar and select E-Mail Accounts
  3. Click the radio button View or change existing e-mail accounts
  4. Click the Next button
  5. Click the Account Name (in this case "mail.umd.edu") and click the Change button

  6. In the E-mail Accounts window, click the More Settings button
  7. If you use mail.umd.edu, click on the Outgoing Server tab and make sure My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication and Use same settings as my incoming mail server are both selected.
    NOTE: These should be un-checked for WAM, Glue, or Deans.

  8. Click on the Advanced tab
  9. Under Server Port Numbers you will see:
    • Incoming server (IMAP) - select This server required an encrypted connection (SSL)
    • Outgoing server (SMTP) - if your outgoing mail server is mail.umd.edu select This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL).
      NOTE: Leave this un-checked for WAM, Glue or Deans.

    Do not change the default port numbers

  10. Click OK to accept the changes
  11. Click the Next button
  12. Click the Finish button
