Macintosh Common Problems

Frozen Application

If, for some reason, a Macintosh application freezes or locks up, but the keyboard is still responding, you may be able to fix the problem without restarting. Hold down the Command and Option keys and press the Escape key, the Force Quit window will appear. Select the application that has stopped responding and click the Force Quit button. This will allow you to save any work in other open applications. You will NOT, however, be able to save any changes in the frozen application. Once the frozen application has shut down, save any unsaved changes in other applications, and log out of any account that you may be using. To be on the safe side, you should restart the workstation.

Dock Application Won't Launch or Quit

Occasionally, a Macintosh application will not launch from the Dock, quit, or an application's icon will become a question mark. This is usually a problem with the application itself, not the Dock.

If you try to launch an application from the Dock and the icon begins to bounce, but the application never loads. Force Quit the application using the steps described above in Frozen Application. If you have quit an application but the icon remains in the Dock, you may also use those steps to rid the Dock of the icon.

If an application's icon in the Dock disappears and becomes a question mark, this means the item in the Dock can't be found. At this point, the application cannot be launched from the Dock. This often happens when you upgrade, move, or delete an application.

Drag the question mark icon to the Desktop and it will disappear. Open the Applications folder on your Hard Drive. Drag the missing application's icon to the Dock.

Mac Won't Wake from Sleep

If you Macintosh does not wake from sleep, usually a forced restart is the only way to make the system respond again. To avoid the problem in the future, there are several basic steps you can take to try to help your computer wake from sleep normally:

  • Reset the PRAM. See Mac: Clearing Information Stored in Parameter RAM
  • Before allowing your computer to sleep, properly disconnect all external USB and Firewire devices.
  • Perform a Software Updates to get all the latest patches for your computer.
  • Download and install all necessary Firmware Updates for your computer.
