The OIT Virus Notification Program

"Besides keeping my anti-virus software up-to-date, what other things can I do to protect myself from viruses?"

Once you have up-to-date anti-virus software running on your computer (which usually only protects you from KNOWN viruses), there are other actions you can take that will also further decrease the chances of your computer being infected by a computer virus. These actions generally fall into 3 categories:

  1. Application Security: Improving the security of computer programs such as Thunderbird, Internet Explorer, Outlook, and Microsoft Office.
  2. Operating System Security: Improving the security of your operating system.
  3. Safe Computing Behavior: Changing your own actions in order to avoid infecting your computer or leaving it vulnerable.
